A poignant antique mourning band, beautifully appointed with a starred setting highlighting a central banded Agate flanked by a pair of natural Pearls; in this instance oft representing tears. Engraved inside the band: 'C.J.Hilton obit Augt 19th 1866'.
After research we have found this piece is in memory of Charles Jones Hilton (1809-1866) who was a prominent Victorian manufacturer, brewer, and civic figure in Faversham, Kent. 
He was married to Anna Maria Shepherd, daughter of local brewer Henry Shepherd,  around 1844, the same year Charles entered into a short-lived partnership in the Shepherd brewery (which later became Shepherd Neame). 
Key details of his life and career:
  • Life Span: Born December 15, 1809, in Faversham, Kent, and died August 19, 1866, in Kensington, Middlesex. 
  • Public Service: Served as the Mayor of Faversham for two terms (1846–1847 and 1850–1851). 
  • Business Career: A key partner in the Shepherd & Hilton brewing business, he later expanded into the cement industry. In 1852, he pioneered the commercial production of Portland cement at the Faversham plant and later constructed a major plant at Upnor, Kent.

Metal: 18ct yellow Gold. Tested but unmarked. Weighs 3grams. 

Ring Size: L and a half or 6 as is. 

In most cases the boxes are for display only but a nice quality modern reproduction box will accompany this piece.
